Vacation Ideas

Summer is here and now is the time to start planning your vacation if you haven’t done so already. Summer vacations create lifelong memories for families or groups of friends. I still remember a vacation my whole family took to Branson, Missouri when I was a kid. Also, a getaway can be just what a group of college friends needs to reunite over the summer and catch up. Plan your getaway soon, let’s get started.

Usually summer vacations revolve around beaches or tropical destinations. I’m going to start off talking about Colorado. Every couple of years my family takes a week-long trip to Colorado. The drive is absolutely beautiful, and there is a lot to do. One place in Colorado that is often overlooked is called SouthFork.  SouthFork, Colorado is a small community with a lot of lodging and plenty to do. Read more…

Can You Afford Your Internship?

Did you just get an internship with a big name company?  Is it the company you’ve always wanted to work for?  Is the internship paid?

Even when the unthinkable happens, the clouds clear and you finally land the internship of your dreams, money can hold you back.  Many of the top companies in big cities offer unpaid internships only.  This can be a problem when it costs $50 a day just to commute.  Here are some things to think about when shooting for that big company name internship:

How are you going to commute?  Trains can be expensive, especially when you consider parking.  Plus, the train may get you into the city you are commuting to, but what about going from there?  You may need a bus, subway, or cab all of which can get expensive (or confusing) if you cannot walk.  Another way to go is taking the bus from the start.  Again, you will need transportation from there.  All of these alternatives are generally cheaper than straight driving your commute due to gas prices, traffic, and parking.  If you take another form of transportation, you can also take that time to nap, read a book, or just relax with some music.

Where will you take your lunch break?  Will you be bringing it or eating out?  Food is the second biggest concern after transportation. Read more…

Final Grades: Damage Control

The last few weeks of class can often be the hardest. You get a little antsy and count down the days until summer, or graduation… or both! The tricky part becomes balancing the books and your strong desire to just be done already. You can’t lose focus because although it may be hard to believe, your grades keep counting—right until the end! You don’t want to be stuck with less than desirable letters to stick on the fridge.

Your final grade report can go one of a few ways. If you work hard and keep on track, your final set of scores will leave a smile on your face. Good for you. Good grades in college, especially in the spring semester, are not an easy feat. Enjoy your few months off and rest up for next semester. Good grades are great, but getting them consistently is even better.

Now maybe you worked hard, but spring fever got the best of you. Not to worry. If you aren’t 100% pleased with the way your final report looks, take time to reflect. Did you turn everything in? Did you complete all of your assignments? Still not happy? Read more…

What to Wear? Tis the Season for Wedding and Graduation Parties!

Tis the season for wedding and graduation parties, what do I wear?

Summer is the season for weddings and graduations. At both events you are sure to run into someone you haven’t seen in a while, an old fling, distant cousin, or your great grandma. What can you wear that satisfies not only yourself, but everyone else as well?  The trouble is, you want to impress your old fling with a sexy sundress without scaring your great grandma away. I have many good ideas to look great and still be tasteful.

If it’s a warm day, try buying a cute sundress. Find a dress that’s just above the knee so it’s not too long, but you’re also not going to flash anyone when you bend over. If it’s a wedding and you think you might get cold in the air conditioning, find a matching cardigan or cropped denim jacket to throw over the top. Pair a sundress with a pair of cowgirl boots or a cute pair of wedges. Read more…

Things I Can’t Wait to Do After Graduation

To all the graduating seniors out there, congratulations!  As the time gets nearer, mixed feelings are bound to arise.  It’s sort of like a break-up that needed to happen: you’re moving on (good) but you’ve also spent some of the best years of your life with this person (which may or may not lead to eating lots of Ben & Jerry’s).

Before you bust out your break-up playlist, here’s a list of some of the things you have to look forward to:

Owning a Pet
No longer under the draconian rules of dorm living, you can finally own a pet.  If you have never lived on your own and had a pet, I can tell you it is really, really nice to have ‘someone’ at the pad to come home to.  Even cats tend to get super cuddly if they have missed you all day.

Should I have one roommate?  Three?  Eight? Read more…

Problems to Avoid at the End of the Semester

It seems like final time is when all of those little annoyance problems happen at once.  Saying that finals are stressful is like saying the sky is blue, and while we are all stressed, and probably sleep deprived, we end up making some sloppy moves, and some bad decisions.  This time around let’s try to avoid that.

SAVE. YOUR. WORK.  Save your work every few minutes.  Any time you face a writing block or take a moment to think, save your work.  Be sure to save your progress in multiple places.Email or even Facebook message your work to yourself (otherwise stay off Facebook).  Use a USB drive to save your work.  Make it a habit to constantly hit CTL-S or Command-S.  Just yesterday, my computer battery died out and needs to be replaced.  Thank goodness I saved my work or I would be up creak without a paddle…

Before you leave your room for the day, take a second and consciously think through what you need for the day. Read more…

Course Evaluations

After months of tortuous papers and projects, hours of mind-numbing lectures, disputes over grades, not-so-patiently waiting for your professor to email you back or handing out grades, filling out course evaluations seem to be a student’s revengeful saving grace.  Some students capitalize on this opportunity to express their true feelings.  Others complain about their professor all semester and as they feel relief that the course is coming to a close, they quickly circle all of the highest scores for their professor and run out of class, disregarding their opportunity to voice any concerns.

Through casual conversation with various students who attend colleges and universities throughout the country, it seems as though students simply do not believe that taking the time to fill out course evaluations holds any weight in terms of improving teaching departments.

Taking course evaluations seriously does impact professor’s teaching styles. Read more…

How to Resolve Conflict with a Roommate

Odds are, in college, you’re going to find yourself bickering with a roommate. Two people can only be around each other for so long before they begin to argue. The best thing to do is to understand that these arguments are going to happen before they actually happen. Here’s how to be prepared.

A fight can cause a lot of drama between two people that have to live in the same room. Arguments may spark from the tiniest things. My roommates used to argue over the dishwasher.  One of them didn’t like how the other one placed their dishes to be cleaned. She would take the dirty dishes out and rearrange them to her content instead of yelling. This is a great plan, because if you’re the one being picky, you must also be the one to compromise.

I once got into a debate with my roommate over noise. Read more…

Some College Statistics

What comes to mind when I mention the word statistics?  Maybe you think of a rough class you took last semester.  You might glance over to your bookshelf to your copy of the Statistics for Dummies book.  Maybe you think of boring charts and graphs.

Chances are, you aren’t the ten percent of people who like statistics, as mentioned by Some People Don’t’ Like Statistics Blog.  But if you are, this blog post is for you.  Here are some interesting college statistics:

To Be or Not To Be…an RA

In college, the housing issue is complicated. Who should you room with? What if you get stuck with a bad roommate? What dorm should you try to get into? Will all your stuff fit into this third-choice room you ended up with? Sometimes one of the most complicated questions: how are you going to pay for this? Dorm life can be expensive, sometimes just as much or more than living in an apartment off-campus. Can they really charge that much when you’re already paying so much for tuition? They can and they do. So you’re considering becoming an RA to save some money. Here’s what you need to know.

A lot about being an RA is give and take: depending on your personality, your experience can be doused with positives and negatives. For starters, you get your own room, which can be nice or lonely. If you’re someone who has had trouble in the past with roommates or just really enjoys your privacy, this is perfect for you. But just because you have your own room doesn’t mean you should necessarily expect to have a lot of alone time. As someone on duty, your door has to be open for your residents basically all the time. Sometimes people will come in just to hang out because they’re lonely. Now and then you’ll have to advise someone facing an issue, like a freshman who’s homesick. So, if you’re a complete loner this may not be the job for you. You have to be helpful and caring toward your residents—even when they annoy you at 3 am.
